DAEGU, South Korea, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Usain Bolt was disqualified for a false start Sunday, suffering a shocking elimination in the final of the men's 100 meters world championship event.

The Jamaican world record holder was hit with a DQ after clearly leaving early from lane 5 in track and field's ultimate event.

Bolt gained the world record two years ago in Berlin, establishing a mark of 9.58 seconds. He is also the reigning Olympic champion in the 100 meters.

But his error Sunday in South Korea cost him a chance to defend his title. After the miscue, he pulled off his jersey and threw it onto the track in disgust as the crowd groaned.

Instead, it was fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake who went on to win the final in 9.92 seconds.

American Walter Dix claimed second at 10.08 seconds while Kim Collins of Saint Kitts and Nevis claimed third place, .01 seconds behind.
