Giants place Schierholtz on disabled list

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- The San Francisco Giants said Saturday they have placed outfielder Nate Schierholtz on the 15-day disabled list with a broken foot.

After trying to play through the pain earlier this month, Schierholtz went out Aug. 21 with a right foot fracture, initially sustained when he fouled a ball off his foot during an Aug. 15 contest.

The outfielder is one of the Giants' better hitters, batting .278 with nine homers and 41 RBI in 115 games this season.

San Francisco also said Saturday it has purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Eric Surkamp from Class AA Richmond. The hurler was to make his major league debut later in the evening.
