MIAMI, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- The University of Miami has declared quarterback Jacory Harris and linebacker Sean Spence ineligible, a source told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
Harris, Spence and several other UM players are being investigated by the NCAA for allegedly receiving impermissible benefits, the Sun-Sentinel said Thursday.
After declaring them ineligible the university requested the players' reinstatement from the NCAA in hopes of having them available to play in the Sept. 5 season opener at Maryland, the report said.
The NCAA has the option to decide whether to reinstate the players immediately, reinstate them on the condition they repay benefits received and sit out a certain amount of games, or deem them permanently ineligible.
Stacey Osburn, NCAA associate director of public and media relations, said the goal of the reinstatement committee when dealing with eligibility cases is that "a student-athlete shouldn't miss competition because they're waiting on a decision, whenever possible."
