MLS, with eye on Hurricane Irene, postpones games

NEW YORK, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Major League Soccer officials, acting ahead of the expected East Coast arrival of Hurricane Irene, announced postponement of two Sunday games.

Matches between the New England Revolution and Philadelphia Union in Pennsylvania and the Los Angeles Galaxy and Red Bull New York in New Jersey were postponed.

Hurricane Irene is expected to reach that part of the U.S. East Coast sometime Sunday. Both games had been set to begin at 7 p.m. EDT Sunday.

The New England-Philadelphia game was moved to Sept. 7 while Los Angeles is to make up its game against New York on Oct. 4.

MLS also said Saturday night's game which has the Portland Timbers playing in Washington against D.C. United, was moved to a 2 p.m. EDT Saturday kickoff.
