Roddick earns quarterfinal berth

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Aug. 24 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed Andy Roddick, trying to build confidence heading into the U.S. Open, reached the quarterfinals Wednesday at the Winston-Salem Open.

Roddick is competing for the first time since Wimbledon, where he was eliminated in the third round. He defeated Santiago Giraldo Wednesday 6-1, 6-3 to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Juan Monaco.

Monaco, seeded seventh, coasted past Kei Nishikori 6-0, 6-3.

In the other half of Roddick's bracket, John Isner will take on Marcos Baghdatis in the quarterfinals. Isner fought off Jarkko Nieminen in the third round 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 while Baghdatis was a 7-5, 6-0 winner over Steve Darcis.

Third-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov reached the quarterfinals by outlasting Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (9-7). He will take on Robin Haase in the next round after Haase eliminated Pierre-Ludovic Duclos 6-4, 7-5.

In the other third-round matches Sergiy Stakhovsky defeated Nikolay Davydenko 6-4, 6-4 and Julien Benneteau rallied to oust Igor Andreev 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).

The U.S. Open begins Monday. Roddick will be seeded 21st.
