CLEVELAND, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Dustin Ackley drove in three runs and Mike Carp homered Tuesday, lifting the Seattle Mariners to a 12-7 win and a doubleheader split with Cleveland.
Ackley singled in a run in the third to give Seattle its first lead at 2-1 and Carp followed with a two-run shot to pad the advantage. Seattle added five more in the next frame to break the game open, highlighted by Ackley's two-run single.
Franklin Gutierrez went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Mariners, who avenged a 7-5 loss in the first game at Cleveland's Progressive Field, which was rocked by the earthquake that shook the U.S. Eastern Seaboard.
Anthony Vasquez (1-0) won in his major league debut despite yielding six runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks over 5 1/3 innings.
Indians rookie Zach McAllister (0-1), making only his second career start, was pounded for 10 runs (eight earned) on nine hits before exiting after only 3 1/3 innings.
Shin-Soo Choo hit a solo homer as the Tribe lost for the fifth time in six games, falling six games behind first-place Detroit in the American League Central.
