Gainey builds three-shot lead at Wyndham

GREENSBORO, N.C., Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Tommy Gainey overcame a second straight poor driving round Friday to move three shots in front midway through the Wyndham Championship.

Gainey, who wears a glove on both hands while playing and thus has earned the nickname "two gloves," shot a 5-under 65 at the Sedgefield Country Club for a 36-hole total of 12-under 128.

He has posted consecutive low scores despite hitting just 57 percent of the fairways.

"That has got to get better," said Gainey, who has had five Top 10 finishes this year but is still looking for his first PGA Tour victory. "The rough is too long. That (poor driving) will catch up to you."

Daniel Summerhays, Webb Simpson, Stuart Appleby and Ernie Els were tied for second at 131 while those at 132 included Jim Furyk, Alexandre Rocha, Paul Casey and Retief Goosen.

This is the last tournament of the tour's regular season and the leading 125 point earners at the end of the week will qualify for the first of the four playoff events.

Els began the week in 126th place and Casey was No. 147. By surviving the 36-hole cut, Els virtually clinched a spot in the playoffs. Casey will need to at least finish among the Top 10 to make the playoff field.

Jeff Quinney, who shared the first-round lead with Gainey, shot a 70 and was in a tie for 10th at 133.

The cut came at 3-under 137 and among those who missed it was Jason Dufner, who lost to Keegan Bradley in a playoff at last week's PGA Championship. Dufner opened with a 66 this week, but wilted to a 73 Friday. Bradley is taking the week off in advance of the playoffs.
