Ambrose wins rain-delayed Sprint Cup race

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y., Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Marcos Ambrose, driving a Ford, picked up his first Sprint Cup Series victory Monday at the Heluva Good Sour Cream Dips at Watkins Glen, N.Y.

The 92-lap, 225-mile race was run Monday after heavy rains caused a postponement Sunday.

Ambrose, who won three Nationwide races at Watkins Glen from 2008-10, hadn't collected a win over his first 104 Sprint Cup starts.

An incident on the closing laps led to a two-lap overtime finish. Kyle Busch, who started the race at the pole position, led at the restart but Brad Keselowski grabbed the lead when Busch and Ambrose spun their tires.

However, Ambrose passed Keselowski on Turn Five of the second-to-last lap and held on for the victory.

Keselowski is still recovering from a broken left ankle suffered four days before winning the Good Sam RV Insurance 500 on Sept. 7.

Busch, who finished third, took over the Sprint Cup Series drivers' standings lead by one point over Carl Edwards with Jimmie Johnson six points off the pace.
