CHICAGO, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Chien-Ming Wang took a no-hitter into the sixth inning Tuesday and the Washington Nationals went on to stifle the Chicago Cubs 3-1.

Wang (1-2), making his third start of the season, pitched six innings of one-hit ball, walking two and striking out one en route to his first victory since June 28, 2009.

The sinkerballer, who won 19 games for the New York Yankees in both 2006 and 2007, struggled with injuries the next two seasons before undergoing shoulder surgery in July 2009.

The Nationals got homers from Jonny Gomes and Michael Morse while winning their seventh in 10 games.

Chicago's Matt Garza (5-9) took the loss despite turning in a quality start, allowing three runs on six hits over six innings while striking out nine.

Starlin Castro cracked a solo homer for the Cubs.
