MLB: Detroit 4, Kansas City 3 (10 innings)

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Brennan Boesch singled in Andy Dirks from second with one away in the 10th inning Friday, giving the Detroit Tigers a 4-3 win over Kansas City.

The Tigers let a three-run lead get away in the seventh but took advantage of wildness on the part of Aaron Crow in the 10th to produce the winning run.

Crow (3-3) walked Wilson Betemit to open the inning and Dirks entered the game as a pinch-runner. After Austin Jackson struck out, Boesch came to the plate and during his at-bat a wild pitch by Crow allowed Dirks to get to second.

Boesch then singled to center to break the tie. Crow also walked Don Kelly but Miguel Cabrera grounded into a double play to prevent further damage.

Jose Valverde retired the Royals in order in the bottom of the inning for his 31st save. He protected the win for Daniel Schlereth (1-1), who worked two innings of hitless relief and was credited with the fourth victory of his three-year career.

Boesch tripled in a run in the first and Alex Avila hit a homer for Detroit in the fifth.
