PHILADELPHIA, July 29 (UPI) -- Nnamdi Asomugha, perhaps the most coveted free agent in the NFL market this summer, unexpectedly signed a five-year deal Friday with the Philadelphia Eagles.

There had been reports that the Pro Bowl cornerback had narrowed his options to the New York Jets and the Dallas Cowboys, but he agreed to a contract with the Eagles that The Philadelphia Inquirer reported was worth $60 million.

Asomugha played his first eight pro seasons with Oakland, recording a career-best eight interceptions in 2006.

"He is one of, if not the best, cornerback in the National Football League," Philadelphia Coach Andy Reid said in announcing the signing.

Asomugha became the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history two seasons ago.

He will join Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Asante Samuel in what should be an outstanding defensive backfield.

"We think we have a great situation right now," Philadelphia General Manager Howie Roseman said. "We're excited about our team."

Philadelphia looked to improve a secondary that allowed 31 aerial touchdowns last season, tied for third worst in the league.
