Ex-basketball star jailed for DUI

BLOOMFIELD, Mich., July 27 (UPI) -- A Michigan judge sentenced former basketball player Jalen Rose to 20 days in jail for drunken driving Wednesday.

Judge Kimberly Small imposed a 93-day sentence in Bloomfield, Mich., but suspended 73 days of the term, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Rose, 38, was arrested March 11 in West Bloomfield after a single-vehicle crash. No one was injured. He registered a 0.08 blood alcohol level, just the legal limit, but a later blood test showed 0.12.

Rose admitted a single misdemeanor of operating a vehicle under the influence and apologized. He reports to jail Tuesday.

Many supporters, including Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, urged the judge not to give him jail time, citing his worthy community activities.

Rose, a University of Michigan basketball star in the early 1990s, played on six teams in the NBA and is now an analyst for ESPN.
