Ramos, Junqueira claim Croatia Open wins

UMAG, Croatia, July 25 (UPI) -- Albert Ramos and Diego Junqueira each defeated Croatian opponents in Monday's opening action of the Croatia Open tennis tournament.

Ramos took out eighth-seeded Ivan Dodig 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 after Junqueira had ousted wild-card entrant Antonio Veic 6-4, 7-5 in the only matches of the main draw Monday.

Ramos broke up a tight match by winning the first five games of the third set before closing out the match with his fifth service break of the day.

Junqueira needed nearly 2 hours in his straight-set win. He cashed in all six of his break-point chances but also dropped serve four times. Veic hurt his chances with seven double faults and by landing only 44 percent of his first serves.

The red clay tournament has a healthy $650,000 purse with $104,000 going to the winner. Juan Ignacio Chela is the top seed and he received a bye into the second round.

Last year's Croatia Open was won by Juan Carlos Ferrero, who defeated Potito Starace in the final. Both have returned for the 2011 draw.
