KANSAS CITY, Mo., July 24 (UPI) -- Rookie Alex Cobb's seven shutout innings and Ben Zobrist's two RBI Sunday paced Tampa Bay to a 5-0 whitewash of Kansas City.
Cobb (3-0), making his seventh major league start, scattered six hits without a walk for the Rays, who avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Royals. He carded two strikeouts.
Zobrist collected three hits and drove in a run when he was hit by a Brandon Wood pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth, giving the Rays a 4-0 lead. The second baseman then capped the scoring with an RBI single in the eighth.
It turned out Evan Longoria's run-scoring single in the first inning had put Tampa Bay ahead for good.
Felipe Paulino (1-4) lasted 5 2/3 innings for Kansas City, surrendering four runs on seven hits.
