DETROIT, July 17 (UPI) -- Carlos Guillen put the Tigers ahead with a run-scoring single in the sixth inning Sunday and Detroit held on for a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox.
Trailing 3-1 entering the frame, Detroit scored three times to take the lead and salvage one win in a three-game set against the White Sox.
Andy Dirks led off the sixth with a double, Magglio Ordonez walked one out later and both runners advanced on Miguel Cabrera's groundout. Victor Martinez then chased both home a clean single to right field and went to second on the throw.
Guillen followed with the go-ahead RBI on a sinking liner to right.
Brad Penny (7-6) earned the victory, working around nine hits. He allowed just three runs over 6 2/3 innings, walking one and fanning two.
Al Alburquerque and Joaquin Benoit combined for 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief and Jose Valverde notched his 25th save for the Tigers.
Chicago's Phil Humber (8-6) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits through 5 2/3 frames.
Alex Rios, A.J. Pierzynski and Gordon Beckham drove in runs for the White Sox.
