STUTTGART, Germany, July 13 (UPI) -- Gael Monfils and Albert Montanes, last year's tournament finalists, were ousted Wednesday at the rain-interrupted Mercedes Cup tennis tournament in Germany.

Monfils, the No. 1 seed after losing the tournament title match to Montanes in 2010, was beaten by Victor Hanescu 2-6, 7-5 (9-7), 6-4. Monfils led 4-2 Tuesday when the match was suspended by rain but Hanescu fought off a pair of match points before forcing the third set and advancing.

Rain was also an issue Wednesday as only three matches -- half the schedule -- were played because of the weather.

Montanes did get his second-round match in, however, falling to Pablo Andujar 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Andujar didn't face a break point in the third set.

Also, in another first-round match, Marcel Granollers ousted seventh-seeded Andreas Seppi 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

Jeremy Chardy had built a 6-1, 1-0 lead over Santiago Giraldo in a second-round match when play was called Wednesday.
