Vinci advances to Palermo second round

PALERMO, Italy, July 12 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Roberta Vinci capped first-round play at the SNAI Open in Italy with a straight-set victory Tuesday.

Vinci converted all six of her break-point changes en route to a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Sesil Karatantcheva. Vinci didn't face a break point in the first set but had to fight through three drops of serve before putting the match away in the second.

All six seeded players on Tuesday's card advanced. That included No. 3-seeded Sara Errani, who topped Regina Kulikova 6-1, 6-3; and fourth-seeded Klara Zakopalova, who didn't win a game in the first set, ended up with a 0-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Anastasia Pivovarova.

Fifth-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues stopped Anna Floris 6-3, 6-3; No. 7 Polona Hercog defeated Karin Knapp 5-7, 6-4, 6-2; and eighth-seeded Petra Cetkovska eliminated Elena Bovina 6-1, 7-5 in the other matches with seeded players.

Also Tuesday, Mathilde Johansson beat Aravane Rezai 7-6 (7-5), 6-1; Sorana Cirstea defeated Andrea Hlavackova 6-3, 6-2; and qualifier Ani Mijacika was a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 winner over Eleni Daniilisdou.

Pauline Parmentier topped Jill Craybas 6-4, 3-6, 6-4; Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino got by Corinna Dentoni 6-3, 7-6 (7-5); and Irina-Camelia Begu beat Maria Elena Camerin 6-2, 7-5 in the other first-round matches.
