MORGANGOWN, W.Va., July 8 (UPI) -- The NCAA announced Friday it had accepted the sanctions the West Virginia football program imposed on itself, leaving the school with a two-year probation.
West Virginia had previously announced it would place restrictions on its coaching staff in terms of recruiting and would reduce the number of scholarships it awards.
"WVU is in receipt of the NCAA's final report of an investigation into violations committed from 2005-09 related to participation and monitoring on non-coaching staff members within our football program," said Athletic Director Oliver Luck said in a statement. "I am pleased that the committee accepted the self-imposed penalties the university proposed without imposing any additional ones. The university has already taken corrective action and put new systems in place to address all the issues raised."
The violations occurred during the tenures of two previous head coaches -- Bill Stewart and Rich Rodriguez. The probation period will end July 7, 2013.
The school determined the football program violated NCAA rules concerning how many coaches can be employed. The chief infraction involved five graduate assistants who helped direct on-field workouts.
West Virginia will have a new head coach in Dana Holgorsen when it begins the 2011 season Sept. 4 against Marshall.
