I.K. Kim leads rain-marred Women's Open

COLORADO SPRINGS, July 8 (UPI) -- I.K. Kim owned a two-shot lead Friday when a long day of golf was suspended due to darkness in the second round of the U.S. Women's Open.

Only about half the golf scheduled for Thursday could be completed because of bad weather, leaving the third major championship of the year on the LPGA Tour badly behind schedule. That meant half the field was on the course almost all day Friday while the other half saw little or no competitive action at the Broadmoor Resort's East course.

Kim shot a 1-under 70 in her opening round Friday and was then 3-under for the second round and 4-under for the tournament with four holes remaining when darkness fell.

Play was again suspended because of storms late in the afternoon, although the players briefly returned to the course shortly before sundown.

When the action was halted the first time, Kraft Nabisco Championship winner Stacy Lewis stood at 5-under and owned the lead. When play resumed she made a bogey and a double bogey to fall back to 2-under with two holes to play. That left her in a tie for second with Wendy Ward, who had three holes left in the second round, and amateur Amy Anderson, who had not even started her second round.

Defending champion Paula Creamer was the only player on the course at 1-under when play ended for the day, having two holes left to play. Those at 1-under who had yet to start their second round were Mika Miyazato, Maria Hjorth, Ai Miyazato and Karrie Webb.

The second round will resume Saturday at 7 a.m. local time. Tournament officials hope to complete the second round early in the afternoon, after which the field will be cut to the low 60 and ties plus anyone within 10 shots of the lead.

Barring further weather delays, as much of the third round as possible will be played Saturday.

World No. 1 Yani Tseng stood at 3-over for the tournament with two holes to play in her second round, tied for 31st.
