MLB: St. Louis 8, Cincinnati 1

ST. LOUIS, July 5 (UPI) -- Matt Holiday socked a pair of homers and Jaime Garcia tossed six strong innings for St. Louis Tuesday in the Cardinals' 8-1 rout of Cincinnati.

Holliday's solo shot in the first gave St. Louis the lead for good at 1-0 and he added three-run bomb in the fifth as the Cardinals lengthened their National League Central lead to 1 1/2 games over Pittsburgh.

Lance Berkman added a bases-empty homer, his 23rd home run of the season, and Ryan Theriot contributed a two-run double in the St. Louis win, which clinched the Cards' three-game set against the Reds.

Garcia (8-3) held Cincinnati to one run on only two hits, walking three and striking out four.

Reds starter Edinson Volquez (5-4) was roughed up for seven runs (six earned) on seven hits before exiting after 5 1/3 innings.

Scott Rolen drove in the only runs for Cincinnati, which lost for the fourth time in five games.

The Cardinals activated first baseman Albert Pujols from the 15-day disabled Tuesday, just two weeks after he broke a bone in his left forearm, but he did not play Tuesday night.
