ST. LOUIS, July 4 (UPI) -- Chris Carpenter hurled eight shutout innings and Mark Hamilton drove in the game's only run Monday, boosting St. Louis to a 1-0 win over Cincinnati.

Carpenter (4-7) was dominant in winning his third straight start, holding the Reds to six hits, issuing only one walk and striking out three in a 119-pitch gem.

Fernando Salas collected his 15th save with a 1-2-3 ninth for the Cardinals, who pulled into a first-place tie with Milwaukee atop the National League Central.

St. Louis took a 1-0 lead in the eighth when Colby Rasmus led off with a single, went to second on Yadier Molina's sacrifice and to third on Skip Schumaker's fly out. Hamilton then lashed a grounder to the foul side of third base that Scott Rolen fielded with a great play, but his throw to first was late, allowing the go-ahead run to score.

Cincinnati's Johnny Cueto (5-3) absorbed the hard-luck loss, tossing a six-hit complete game. Cueto yielded only the one run while walking three and striking out none.
