Caps sign goalie Vokoun to 1-year deal

WASHINGTON, July 2 (UPI) -- Free-agent goalie Tomas Vokoun has signed a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals, the NHL team said Saturday.

Vokoun, 35, compiled a 22-28-5 mark, including six shutouts, in 57 games last season with the Florida Panthers.

His acquisition fills a void for the Capitals, who Friday dealt 23-year-old netminder Semyon Varlamov to the Colorado Rockies for two draft picks.

The Caps didn't disclose the terms of the deal, but multiple reports indicated it was for $1.5 million.

"We are excited to add an elite veteran goaltender to the Capitals," Washington General Manager George McPhee said. "We now have a nice blend of talent, depth, experience and youth in the goaltending position."

The Czech goalie is a two-time all-star who has compiled a 262-267-76 record, 2.56 GAA, .917 save percentage and 44 shutouts in 632 career games with the Canadiens, Nashville and Panthers.
