BERLIN, June 26 (UPI) -- Kerstin Garefrekes and Celia Okoyino da Mbabi scored first-half goals Sunday, allowing Germany to post a 2-1 win over Canada in a Women's World Cup game.
Germany opened its world title defense in Group A play when Garefrekes scored 10 minutes into the contest and then assisted on Okoyino da Mbabi's tally shortly before halftime.
Christine Sinclair pulled Canada to within a goal with a goal on a free kick in the 82nd minute, but her team could get no closer.
It was the first goal Germany gas allowed in a World Cup since the 2003 final.
Germany now goes on to face Nigeria Thursday, while Canada meets France the same day.
