SAN FRANCISCO, June 25 (UPI) -- Cleveland Indians right fielder Shin-Soo Choo has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left thumb, the team said Saturday.
Choo was struck in the right thumb by a Jonathan Sanchez high fastball in the fourth inning of Friday's 4-3 Indians loss to San Francisco.
Choo collapsed to the ground in obvious pain after being struck by the pitch and medical personnel needed to cut the batting glove off his hand to examine the thumb.
The team said Choo would fly to Cleveland Sunday for a surgical consultation at the Cleveland Clinic. If surgery were performed he would be out much longer than 15 days.
Choo was hitting .244 with a .333 on-base percentage, five homers and 28 RBI in 72 games this season.
Cleveland recalled outfield Travis Buck from Class AAA Columbus to take Choo's spot. Buck has batted .228 in 32 games for the Indians this season.
