Marlins skipper Rodriguez resigns

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., June 19 (UPI) -- Florida Marlins Manager Edwin Rodriguez turned in his resignation Sunday after the team stumbled to a 1-17 mark in June.

Rodriguez, who took over the reins of the club in the middle of last season after predecessor Fredi Gonzalez was fired, went 46-46 over the last 92 games of the 2010 season before compiling a 32-39 record this year.

The Marlins were 10 games over .500 at 30-20 and thought a viable contender in the National League East before their current freefall, which has seen them go 2-19 since then, tumbling into last place in the division.

Rodriguez, 50, became the first Puerto Rican-born manager in major league history when he took the Marlins' reins last season.

Marlins President of Baseball Operations Larry Beinfest said bench coach Brandon Hyde would manage during Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg, with a search for an interim manager commencing immediately.
