MLB: Arizona 3, San Francisco 2 (10 inn.)

PHOENIX, June 17 (UPI) -- Justin Upton hit a one-out homer in the 10th inning Thursday to give Arizona a 3-2 victory over San Francisco.

The Diamondbacks avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Giants, who had won three in a row.

Arizona took a 2-1 lead into the ninth, but closer J.J. Putz blew the save opportunity when he loaded the bases with nobody out and eventually gave up a sacrifice fly to Pat Burrell.

The Diamondbacks quickly ended it, however, when Upton drove the first pitch he saw from Santiago Casilla (0-1) into the right field seats.

Chris Young hit a two-run homer to give the Diamondbacks the lead in the fourth and they remained in front until the ninth.

Arizona starter Ian Kennedy allowed a run on four hits with 10 strikeouts over eight innings. After Putz failed to convert the save chance, David Hernandez (3-2) worked the top of the 10th to get the win.
