Berrer starts UNICEF Open with big upset

'S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands, June 13 (UPI) -- Michael Berrer ousted top-seeded Nicolas Almagro in first-round action Monday at the UNICEF Open tennis tournament in the Netherlands.

Berrer parlayed a second-set tiebreaker win and his lone service break of the match into a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Almagro in the grass-court tournament. Berrer, ranked 79th compared to Almagro's No. 15, improved to 2-0 in his career versus Almagro.

The server was in control in the match with just 39 of the 175 points going to the receivers. Almagro didn't face a break point until the third set when Berrer finished off one of the four break chances he had.

Second-seeded Marcos Baghdatis advanced with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win over Arnaud Clement but Nicolas Mahut ousted No. 6-seeded Adrian Mannarino 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

Teymuraz Gabashvili defeated Konstantin Kravchuk 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in the only match Monday other than Berrer's to go three sets.

Other first-round results saw Dmitry Tursunov defeat Robert Kendrick 6-2, 7-6 (7-3); Filippo Volandri stop Ricardo Mello, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5); and Denis Gremelmayr get past Ludovic Walter 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
