Cubs draft son of hockey's Wayne Gretzky

CHICAGO, June 7 (UPI) -- The Chicago Cubs said Tuesday they have drafted high school first baseman Trevor Gretzky, the son of hockey great Wayne Gretzky.

Trevor Gretzky, 18, of Westlake Village, Calif., was taken by the Cubs at No. 219 overall in the major league baseball draft after working out for the team's scouts last weekend in Arizona, MLB.com reported.

The left-handed hitter, who is committed to attending San Diego State University, saw his stock rise when he hit for the cycle and drove in a school-record nine runs in an April game for Oaks Christian High School.

Trevor, who like his NHL Hall of Fame father wears No. 99, hit .341 with two homers and 33 RBIs as a high school junior, the Web site reported.

The Cubs also selected the son of former shortstop Shawon Dunston Tuesday, taking 6-foot-2, 170-pound Shawon Dunston Jr., a left-handed hitting outfielder from Valley Christian High School in San Jose, Calif.
