Prince William backs FIFA election delay

LONDON, May 31 (UPI) -- Britain's Prince William Tuesday joined the English Football Association in calling for the postponement of FIFA's upcoming presidential election.

A St. James Palace representative said the prince is "fully behind" a move by FA Chairman David Bernstein to seek a delay in Wednesday's FIFA presidential election, in which incumbent Joseph "Sepp" Blatter is running unopposed in the midst of a bribery scandal.

Blatter's only opponent, Asian football chief Mohamed Bin Hammam, dropped out of the race during the weekend just before he was handed a provisional suspension banning him from all soccer-related activities on bribery charges.

Another FIFA executive committee member, Jack Warner, was also suspended.

Bernstein Monday called on FIFA to "postpone the election and give credibility to this process so any alternative reforming candidate could have the opportunity to stand for president."

Prince William "is fully supportive of the chairman and the initiatives the FA has recommended," the royal family spokesman said. "He considers the transparency of the international governing body to be integral to the good governance of the game."
