Lightning's Downie day-to-day after check

TAMPA BAY, Fla., May 22 (UPI) -- The Tampa Bay Lightning said Steve Downie was on day-to-day status Sunday after suffering a head injury in Saturday's game against Boston.

Downie was checked into the boards by the Bruins' Nathan Horton late in the game and was called for diving by the referee, who concluded Downie had overstated the collision in an attempt to draw a penalty on Horton.

The St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times said Sunday Downie's teammates suggested his role as Tampa Bay's tough guy may have influenced the call.

But Coach Guy Boucher was overall complimentary to the officiating in the Eastern Conference finals, which are tied 2-2 and resume Monday in Boston.

"If it's a mistake and the (referees) make only one during the entire game, they're like coaches and players if they limit their mistakes," said Boucher. "The referees have been great the past two games. They let the players play."
