MLB: Arizona 2, Atlanta 1

PHOENIX, May 20 (UPI) -- J.J. Putz struck out Freddie Freeman in the ninth with the game on the line Thursday, allowing the Arizona Diamondbacks to hold on for a 2-1 win over Atlanta.

The Diamondbacks won their third straight but only after ninth-inning drama brought about by an Arizona miscue.

Arizona had a 2-0 lead heading into the ninth after starter Josh Collmenter (3-0) and three relievers had combined to give up four hits without a walk. Putz came on to preserve the lead and quickly got Jason Heyward on a grounder back to the mound and Chipper Jones on a fly ball to left.

Brian McCann, however, doubled and scored when Arizona right fielder Justin Upton misplayed a fly ball by Dan Uggla for an error.

With the tying run suddenly on first, Putz struck out Freeman on four pitches to end the game. It was the 10th save for Putz.

Both Arizona runs came in the sixth with Chris Young hitting a solo homer, his ninth of the year, and Juan Miranda producing an RBI triple later in the inning.
