Lee pulls off upset in LPGA match play

GLADSTONE, N.J., May 19 (UPI) -- Meena Lee pulled off a huge upset Thursday, defeating second-seeded Jiyai Shin in the opening round of the Sybase Match Play Championship.

Lee won the 17th and 18th holes for a 2-up victory over Shin, who has been in and out of the No. 1 world ranking during the past year.

Shin was one of two among the Top 10 seeded players to fall Thursday. Eighth-seeded Song-Hee Kim dropped a 3-and-1 decision to Sophie Gustafson.

Top-seeded Na Yeon Choi advanced with a 3-and-2 decision over Karen Stupples and No. 3 seed Cristie Kerr was a 3-and-2 victor over Amanda Blumenherst.

Michelle Wie and Paula Creamer were also first-round winners in the 64-player event.

This tournament began last year and in the inaugural event, only nine lower seeds won in the opening round. This year the lower seeds went 18-14 to start the event.

Defending champion Sun Young Yoo survived with a victory over Grace Park in 21 holes. The player Yoo defeated in last year's final, Angela Stanford, advanced with a 4-and-2 win over Candie Kung.
