Papelbon gave up a leadoff double to Victor Martinez in the ninth and pinch-runner Andy Dirks reached third with one out. Papelbon then struck out Alex Avila and Ryan Raburn to end the game and grab his eighth save.

Bard (1-3) got the win in relief of Buchholz, who struck out seven and gave up four hits with one walk in seven innings.

The Boston run came off Daniel Schlereth (0-1), the third of four Detroit pitchers.

The Tigers went hitless in 10 chances with runners in scoring position. After winning seven in a row, Detroit has lost two straight.
