OAKLAND, Calif., May 17 (UPI) -- Kurt Suzuki scored the winning run by beating a throw home in the 10th inning Monday, giving the Oakland Athletics a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
Mark Ellis battled through a nine-pitch at-bat, finally hitting a chopper to the right side of the infield. Left fielder Howard Kendrick, brought in as an extra infielder, caught the ball but threw high to home, although the sliding Suzuki may have beaten even a more accurate throw.
Oakland forced extra innings with a two-out single by Daric Barton that tied the score at 4-4 and allowed Grant Balfour (3-1), who pitched the 10th, to collect the win.
The A's scored their first three runs in the fifth inning with the help of a hit by pitch, an error, three hits and a sacrifice fly.
Los Angeles had two-run rallies in the sixth and seventh innings. Alberto Callaspo got the first run home on a fielder's choice and Mark Trumbo added a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Kendrick had a two-run single in the seventh.
