DUSSELDORF, Germany, May 16 (UPI) -- John Isner won a singles match and teamed with Mardy Fish for a win in doubles Monday, giving the United States a point in the World Team Cup tennis tournament.

Isner was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Sweden's Christian Lindell before he and Fish edged Simon Aspelin and Robert Linstedt 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-4. That gave the Americans a point in their opening series of Red Group round-robin play in Germany.

Sweden, despite Robin Soderling's 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3) win over Sam Querrey, was left without a point and trails the United States and Argentina, which won its point Sunday over Kazakhstan.

Isner saved all three of the break points he faced against Lindell, and he and Fish combined for 14 aces in the doubles win. Querrey had 21 aces versus Soderling.

Florian Mayer claimed a straight-set win in singles and Christopher Kas and Philipp Petzschner earned a doubles victory in finishing off Germany's 3-0 sweep of Serbia in Blue Group play.

Also Monday, the Spanish team of Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez beat Russians Victor Baluda and Dmitry Tursunov but the Russians had locked up the team point with two singles wins Sunday.
