Boogaard death not foul play

MINNEAPOLIS, May 14 (UPI) -- Foul play has been ruled out as the cause of death of New York Rangers forward Derek Boogaard, Minneapolis authorities said Saturday.

City police Sgt. William Palmer said toxicology reports must be developed over several weeks before it can be determined how the 28-year-old former Minnesota Wild player died.

But Palmer told the Minneapolis Star Tribune "foul play is not suspected" in the NHL enforcer's death.

The newspaper cited sources saying Boogaard was found dead in his Minneapolis Warehouse District condominium Friday night by his two visiting brothers.

Police said they received a 911 call from the condo reporting a man unconscious and not breathing. Emergency workers responding to the scene found Boogaard dead.

Minneapolis police and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office are investigating, the newspaper said.

Boogaard was chosen with the seventh pick of the 2001 draft by the Wild and played with that team for five seasons beginning in 2005. In 255 games with the Wild, he had 14 points and 544 penalty minutes.

He signed a four-year contract with the Rangers last July.
