CHICAGO, May 12 (UPI) -- A home run by Matt Holliday touched off a five-run second inning Thursday that sent the St. Louis Cardinals coasting to a 9-1 rout of the Chicago Cubs.
Jon Jay drove in three runs while the Cardinals were collecting 16 hits en route to their second win in the three-game series.
St. Louis starter Jaime Garcia (5-0) gave up a season-worst nine hits but allowed only one run over seven innings.
Chicago's Casey Coleman faced just three batters in the first, but he surrendered a leadoff homer to Holliday in the second and things only got worse.
Colby Rasmus followed with a single and moved to third on a double by Yadier Molina. After Tyler Greene was walked intentionally to load the bases, Garcia helped his own cause with an RBI single.
Jay then drove in two runs with a double and Allen Craig brought in another with a sacrifice fly. Jay also had an RBI single during a three-run seventh.
Coleman (1-3) gave up six runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings to take the loss.
