ST. LOUIS, May 7 (UPI) -- Yovani Gallardo had a no-hit bid ruined in the eighth inning Saturday while leading Milwaukee to its first win in eight games, a 4-0 victory over St. Louis.
Gallardo was making his attempt at baseball history at the same time Detroit's Justin Verlander was completing a no-hitter against Toronto.
Daniel Descalso played the role of spoiler for the Cardinals, however, by leading off the eighth with a single on a 1-1 pitch. Gallardo allowed no further damage and was relieved in the ninth by John Axford.
Gallardo (3-2) walked four and struck out six. Milwaukee's last previous win had come on April 29 at Houston. Gallardo had started against Atlanta in the midst of Milwaukee's seven-game losing streak.
Casey McGehee doubled home a run in the third and the Brewers did not score again until the ninth.
Carlos Gomez highlighted the three-run ninth with a two-run triple. Kyle Lohse (4-2) was the hard-luck loser, allowing a lone run on six hits in eight innings.
