Detroit let a three-goal lead get away before Helm fired a shot from the left circle that made it past Antti Niemi.

The other three Detroit goals came in the first period, with Nicklas Lidstrom scoring the last two. His power-play goal gave the Red Wings a 3-0 lead with 1:59 to go in the period, but Logan Couture tallied for San Jose just 15 seconds later.

Dan Boyle produced the only goal of the second period to bring the Sharks within one and Dany Heatley tied it just 1:14 into the third.

Jimmy Howard, who allowed eight goals and made 113 saves while losing each of the first three games of the series, stopped another 25 shots Friday.

Niemi was credited with 36 saves in taking the loss.
