COLUMBUS, Ohio, May 5 (UPI) -- Former Ohio State quarterback Art Schlichter has been unable to strike a plea deal on theft charges that would reduce his bail, his former lawyer said.
Attorney Sam Shamansky told The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch his ex-client wants to spend some time with his family and continue treatment for a gambling addiction before reporting to prison.

Schlichter was arraigned Wednesday on a dozen theft charges in an alleged sports-ticket scam. He was indicted last week after Shamansky was unable to convince prosecutors to cut his $1 million bail to an affordable level.
The Dispatch said Thursday the disgraced ex-Buckeye's new lawyer planned to file a motion for bail reduction once the case is assigned to a trial judge.
