Hurricanes footballer charged with rape

CORAL GABLES, Fla., May 4 (UPI) -- University of Miami redshirt freshman football player Jeffrey Brown was charged Wednesday with sexual battery, authorities said.

Coral Gables, Fla., police said the 19-year-old defensive lineman was charged attacking a woman in a dorm room early Saturday, The Miami Herald reported.

An arrest affidavit alleges Brown, of Evanston, Ill., raped the woman, who was intoxicated and ill, after entering her room under the pretense of being concerned about her health.

Police said the woman claimed she couldn't fight off Brown, listed as 6-foot-3 and 295 pounds, after telling him to stop.

Authorities allege Brown recanted an initial denial of having sex with the woman.

The lineman is the second Miami Hurricanes player to be arrested in less than two months. Linebacker Ramon Buchanan has entered a pre-trial diversion program after being charged with trespassing and resisting arrest last month at a Coconut Grove, Fla., bar, the Herald said.
