MLB: New York Yankees 5, Detroit 3

DETROIT, May 2 (UPI) -- Nick Swisher's ninth-inning single drove in the go-ahead run Monday and the New York Yankees beat Detroit 5-3, handing the Tigers their seventh straight loss.

With the score tied 3-3, Mark Teixeira drew a one-out walk from Tigers reliever Jose Valverde (2-1) and went to second on an Alex Rodriguez single. Swisher then lined a hit to center field and Teixeira slid home under the tag, putting the Yanks ahead.

Joba Chamberlain (2-0) got credit for the victory with a scoreless eighth in relief of starter Bartolo Colon, who held the Tigers to three runs on seven hits over seven frames.

Alex Avila socked a pair of solo homers and Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Detroit.
