VALDOSTA, Ga., April 30 (UPI) -- Eight-time all-star baseball pitcher John Smoltz took a hit to his pro golfing hopes Saturday, missing the cut by 27 strokes at a Nationwide Tour event.
Smoltz, a likely future Hall of Famer hurler, wasn't able to transfer those skills to the links at the South Georgia Classic, carding a 15-over-par 87 in the tourney's second round.
His two-round total of 27-over 171 was well below the cut line of 144.
"Never in a million years did I think I would shoot those two rounds but it happened," Smoltz told MLB.com. "I'm going to learn from it and stick to recreational golf for right now until I get back to the point where I want to be."
Smoltz, who spent 20 of his 21 major league seasons with the Atlanta Braves, received a sponsor's exemption to compete in the tourney.
He is currently a sports analyst for the TNT and TBS television networks.
