Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong (1-0) -- the first of five San Francisco pitchers -- collected the win. He allowed both Pittsburgh runs, all four of its hits, walked two and struck out eight. Brian Wilson pitched the ninth and picked up his seventh save.

San Francisco loaded the bases with no outs in the third on a Mike Fontenot single, a hit batter and a sacrifice bunt by Vogelsong, on which he reached. Aaron Rowland followed with a shot down the left-field line and got two runs home.

The Giants again loaded the bases and Vogelsong scored on a ground out. Pablo Sandoval later attempted to steal second and drew a throw, allowing Roland to steal home for a 4-0 lead.

Roland's run-scoring single in the seventh chased Pittsburgh starter Jeff Karstens (2-1), who allowed five runs -- two earned -- and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.
