Jose Tabata scored from second when Jayson Werth's errant throw home on Neil Walker's single got away from catcher Wilson Ramos, bringing Pittsburgh to within a run.

Wood then sliced a double into the right-center field alley, driving in Walker and Steve Pearce to put the Bucs ahead. Wood then came home on Chris Snyder's single.

Paul Maholm (1-3) notched his first win of the year, holding the Nats to two runs on four hits over seven innings, walking two while fanning eight.

Washington's John Lannan (2-2) yielded all four Pirates runs on five hits, walking two during a 5 2/3-inning start.

Adam LaRoche drove in both Nationals runs with first-inning single.
