Anderson takes first-round win in Portugal

ESTORIL, Portugal, April 25 (UPI) -- Kevin Anderson needed three sets before he advanced Monday out of the first round of the Estoril Open tennis tournament in Portugal.

Anderson, the No. 7 seed this week, was the only seeded player on the men's schedule Monday, and he had to battle nearly 2 1/2 hours to defeat Thiemo de Bakker 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. Anderson had to deal with only two break-point situations after the first set.

Victor Hanescu and Jeremy Chardy each won in straight sets Monday. Chardy took out Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 6-3 behind eight aces and five service breaks. Hanescu was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Rui Machado. Hanescu was good on 76 percent of his first serves and ended up winning 68 percent of the points on serve.

Joao Sousa moved into the second round when Gastao Elias retired in the third set in a battle of Portuguese wild-card entrants. Sousa was ahead 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 5-2 when the 2 1/2-hour match was halted.
