MLB: Boston 4, Los Angeles Angels 3

ANAHEIM, Calif., April 23 (UPI) -- Jon Lester gave Boston six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts Friday and the Red Sox hung on to edge the Los Angeles Angels 4-3.

Boston took a 4-0 lead into the seventh inning but the Angels scored once in that inning and added two more in the eighth. Bobby Abreu raced in from third with the second run in the eighth on a passed ball but with the potential tying score on first Bobby Jenks retired Maicer Izturis on a groundout to end the threat.

Jonathan Papelbon came on in the ninth and gave up a one-out single before earning his fifth save.

Jacoby Ellsbury doubled home Boston's first run in the third and a fielding error by Los Angeles center fielder Peter Bourjos allowed two unearned runs to score in the fourth. J.D. Drew added an RBI single in the sixth.

Dan Haren (4-1) suffered the loss. He surrendered only two earned runs on five hits in six innings.
