Top seed beaten at WTA event in Morocco

FES, Morocco, April 20 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Aravane Rezai and No. 3-seeded Lourdes Dominguez Lino were both ousted Wednesday at the WTA tournament in Morocco.

Rezai was defeated by local favorite Nadia Lalami 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in a second-round match. Lalami, ranked 497th in the world, dropped serve seven times but only once in the decisive third set when she broke Rezai's serve twice.

Melanie Oudin took out Dominguez Lino 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in a first-round match that was postponed Tuesday due to darkness. Oudin won nearly two-thirds of the points in the second and third sets.

No. 8-seeded Alize Cornet finished off a match started Tuesday, beating Andrea Hlavackova 6-3, 6-3, and the other first-round match went to Polona Hercog, who was a 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 winner over Chanelle Scheepers in a match that took nearly 3 hours.

Fourth-seeded Greta Arn claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kristyna Pliskova; No. 7 Simona Halep stopped Alla Kudryavtseva 6-2, 6-4; and Kirsten Flipkens advanced over Eleni Daniilidou 6-4, 7-5 in Wednesday's other second-round matches.

Lalami moves into Friday's quarterfinals against Flipkens while Arn and Halep are paired against each other in another quarterfinal. The last two quarterfinals will be set after Thursday's matches.
