BOSTON, April 18 (UPI) -- Daisuke Matsuzaka allowed one hit over seven innings and was backed by a 13-hit attack Monday in Boston's 9-1 Patriot Day victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
Jed Lowrie had four hits and drove in four runs. He, Kevin Youkilis and Jacoby Ellsbury hit home runs in fueling the Red Sox offense.
In his previous start against Toronto, Matsuzaka (1-2) allowed seven runs and eight hits in two innings. But outside of a two-out first-inning single by Jose Bautista and a second-inning walk, Matsuzaka was perfect Monday. He retired the last 16 batters he faced.
Boston scored twice in the first inning in sending Ricky Romero (1-2) off to the loss. He allowed eight hits, five walks and five runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Lowrie singled in the runs in the first and Youkilis made it 3-0 in the third when, after he tripled, he scored on a David Ortiz single.
Lowrie's two-run home run in the fifth boosted the score to 5-0. Youkilis chipped in a two-run homer in the three-run Boston sixth and Ellsbury's home run came in the seventh and made the score 9-0.
Toronto's Yunel Escobar broke the shutout with a home run with one out in the ninth.
