Hamilton wins Chinese Grand Prix

SHANGHAI, April 17 (UPI) -- Lewis Hamilton edged Sebastian Vettel by 5.1 seconds Sunday and won the Chinese Grand Prix, ending Vettel's four-race Formula One winning streak.

It was the 15th career Grand Prix win for Hamilton, who moved into second in this year's drivers' standings. Vettel, who won the last two races last season, had opened 2011 with back-to-back wins.

Hamilton, driving for McLaren-Mercedes, completed the 56-lap, 190-mile race in 1 hour, 36.58 seconds, 5.1 seconds ahead of Vettel's Red Bull Racing-Renault.

Mark Webber, also with RBR-Renault, was third, 7.5 seconds behind Hamilton while Jenson Button, a teammate of Hamilton's, took fourth another 2.5 seconds back and Mercedes' Nico Rosberg was fifth, 13.4 seconds off the pace.

Vettel started at the pole but was passed on the first turn by Button and Hamilton. Vettel caught Hamilton by the 13th lap and was able to move into first when Button drove into the wrong pit.

Vettel tried to run the race on just two pit stops -- most drivers made three -- but the strategy failed and Hamilton moved into the lead on the 52nd lap and held on to win.

Vettel, defending driving champion, has 68 points in the drivers' standings. Hamilton has moved into second with 47. Button (38 points) is third and Webber (37) sits in fourth.

The next Formula One race is May 8 when the Turkish Grand Prix, which was won by Hamilton last year, is scheduled.
